Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Inspired by a story in the Sanskrit epic Ramayana, and commissioned to mark the 250th anniversary of Mozart's birth, Garin Nugroho's gamelan musical is replete with sumptuous symbolism that's worthy of a Paradjanov or Tarkovsky movie. The brilliance is often baffling, however, as much of the meaning conveyed by the production will only be fully comprehensible to those versed in Indonesian conceptual art and the intricacies of Javanese shadow puppetry. Nevertheless, the tale of a former dancer (Artika Sari Devi) whose passions are inflamed by a prosperous butcher (Eko Supriyanto) when her potter husband (Martinus Miroto) falls on hard times is a sensual feast, that is sustained by breathtaking cinematography and choreography. Don't worry if you don't understand the subtleties of "wayang orang" dance drama or appreciate the skill of the "tembang" singing style - just let this unique audiovisual experience wash over you.
