Review
Satyajit Ray filmed two of Tagore's stories as his tribute on the centenary of the author's birth. Both are charming tales about the difficulties faced by young women in love. In The Postmaster an orphaned girl becomes attached to her employer, who repays her affection by helping with her education. A young man rejects an arranged marriage in The Conclusion, but finds that his own choice of bride resents being forced into matrimony. The film's success is due as much to the gifted playing and Ray's observant eye, as to Tagore's skills as a storyteller. It was originally titled Three Daughters, but a third story was cut when the film was released abroad.
