Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Claude Chabrol follows La Femme Infidèle and Le Boucher with another masterly thriller, in which Stéphane Audran (Mrs Chabrol) refuses to believe her husband - creepy Michel Bouquet - has intentionally murdered his mistress. The latter just happened to be married to their best friend; surely, Audran thinks, it was an accident? This little parable about guilt and bourgeois morality in the provinces amounts to as much or as little as you want to read into it. But few could resist the elegant way in which Chabrol tells the story, or the immaculate acting from his wife and the rest of the cast.
