This fun if sometimes problematic French comedy from versatile director François Ozon (Frantz) brings together a fine cast for some bad-taste japes. Loosely based on the 1934 play Mon Crime and set in inter-war Paris, it sees struggling actor Madeleine (Nadia Tereszkiewicz) escape a casting couch-style encounter with theatre producer Montferrand (Jean-Christophe Bouvet). When Montferrand is subsequently murdered, Madeleine becomes the chief suspect, catapulting her into the spotlight. The situation is only exacerbated by the actions of her shrewd flatmate Pauline (Rebecca Marder), a lawyer who's also looking to make a name for herself. This elegantly attired film skips along and the young female leads are effervescent, with the likes of Isabelle Huppert (in a role based on the actress Sarah Bernhardt) and Fabrice Luchini hamming it up enjoyably in support. If the film's screwball schtick is generally appealing, the moments where it makes light of sexual assault are not; following the industry's *#*MeToo reckoning, these bring a troubling flavour to an otherwise genial tale.
