Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

An inspired piece of casting sheds new light on this Soviet parable. Half a century after he appeared in The Extraordinary Adventures of Mr West in the Land of the Bolsheviks (in which a sceptical American comes to embrace communism), Leonid Obolensky co-starred in this subtle inversion, in which a trio of aliens arrive on Earth to discover it's a planet utterly unprepared to receive the wisdom of their civilisation. The scientist whom they befriend (played by the great director Sergei Bondarchuk) reaches a similar conclusion and abandons his research around longevity. It's often unbearably preachy, but a bold venture nevertheless.
