Legs Sadovsky gets four other high school girls to think for themselves and react to a teacher's sexual harassment, which gets them suspended. They bond, and rebel, at an abandoned house.
Four teenage girls discover their common strengths when they tire of an abusive teacher and the negligent school system that ignores him. Hedy Burress is the film's focus, with the ever-smirking Angelina Jolie as "Legs", the independent wanderer who floats into the lives of the other girls just as they need that extra push into rebellion. The male characters are painted rather flatly as either abusive or obtuse, mostly to give the girls more incentive to revolt. This probably would have had more impact if, like the book that inspired it, the film had been set in its original 1950s milieu.
