Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

George du Maurier's famous Victorian novel, Trilby, tells of a beautiful young girl whose singing teacher uses hypnotism to turn her into a great opera singer. This version shifts the novel's emphasis on to Svengali himself, played in his most uninhibited, histrionic style by John Barrymore, while Marian Marsh is the artist's model who falls under his spell. Apart from the Oscar-nominated cinematography and the historical interest of watching Barrymore in action, there's not much of interest in this melodrama, which lacks the compulsive horror of The Phantom of the Opera.
