Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

This hard-hitting, true-story drama features a compellingly strong performance from Molly Ringwald as Alison Gertz, a white middle-class girl who had only a handful of sexual partners prior to discovering she was HIV-positive. Ringwald's career hit its peak in the mid-1980s in such Brat Pack movies as The Breakfast Club and Pretty in Pink, but she subsequently struggled to find roles as good as this one. The problem here is not the usual "drowning in a sea of tears" scenario, but the rather overt and simplistic way in which the movie suggests there are "nice girls" like Gertz who don't deserve Aids and the "other sort" who somehow do.
