Drama starring Emmanuelle Béart and Michel Serrault. Nelly is struggling to make enough money to support both her and her jobless, indolent husband Jérôme. She is introduced to the suave Monsieur Arnaud, an old friend of her mother's, and though she turns down his discreet offer of financial help, the meeting proves fateful.
Director Claude Sautet's distinctively cool style is wonderfully suited to this melancholy study of a young woman (Emmanuelle Béart) who becomes involved in a fragile, unfulfilled relationship with the elderly businessman (Michel Serrault) for whom she works as a secretary. There are more emotional insights than you find in many a so-called romantic movie - looks that are loaded with meaning, touches that bruise with the suggestion of passion - while the tale of obsession is told so discreetly it makes the film all the more haunting.
