Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Published posthumously, DH Lawrence's novella explored many of the sexual and social themes that recurred so often in his work. In this film version, Joanna Shimkus plays the curious innocent, whose strict upbringing drives her to sample the forbidden temptations offered by traveller Franco Nero. Even though both give decent performances, their sex scenes won't raise many pulse rates. So rejoice instead in the accomplished playing of the supporting cast, which boasts such stalwarts as Fay Compton (as the tyrannical grandmother), Kay Walsh (as Aunt Cissie) and Maurice Denham as Shimkus's reverend father. Director Christopher Miles captures the period well, but overall the film smoulders when it should catch fire.
