Henry Cavill broods beautifully next to Jake Gyllenhaal, also brooding beautifully, in this non-stop Guy Ritchie action caper. They play the right-hand men of Eiza González's debt collector Rachel Wild. She's volunteered to reclaim the billion dollars lent to crime boss Salazar (Carlos Bardem), who really doesn't want to give it back. Rachel explains her job in voiceover from the film's opening seconds; later on, the men take over the exposition, sketching out a complicated, weapons-heavy rendezvous on Salazar's private island. Much of the film concerns this planning, with nods to classic heist yarns The Italian Job and the Ocean's franchise. Unfortunately, the exposition here overstays its welcome, seemingly going on forever and becoming, at times, tough to follow. But thankfully, Ritchie brings his usual slickness to the action: the final act, which is one big chase, is thrilling. And rest assured, all the writer/director's usual Cock-er-nee dialogue is in place: "Bob's your uncle, Fanny's your aunt!" If you say so, Guy.
