Made almost a decade after the better-known Clint Eastwood movie Escape from Alcatraz, this is a more conventional TV movie reconstruction of an earlier escape attempt from the infamous maximum security island prison in San Francisco Bay. Paul Wendkos's direction tends towards the routine, but the cast, including Jan-Michael Vincent and Dennis Farina, is impressive, while the story of the true-life 1946 break-out by six convicts is dramatic and violent enough to hold the attention.
