Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Emotion and philosophy merge in this intelligent sci-fi tear-jerker from writer/director Benjamin Cleary. Mahershala Ali stars as Cameron, a family man keeping his terminal illness a secret from his wife, Poppy (Naomie Harris), and their son. Experimental scientist Dr Scott (Glenn Close) offers Cameron the option to transfer his memories to a healthy clone body and die quietly so that his family need never know he's gone, but will Cameron sign up? The near-future trappings are practical rather than flashy in this thoughtful meditation on mortality and selfhood, and Cleary resists any temptation to sensationalise the theme of cloning. Handled with restraint, the film anchors ideas in emotion, and is helped by its fine casting. While Awkwafina and Harris impress in grounding support roles, Ali conveys with aching conviction Cameron's dawning acceptance that life will continue after he's gone.
