Summary

Festive horror comedy starring Martin Starr and Amrita Acharia. After inheriting a house in the mountains of Norway, an American family ups sticks from California and relocates. However, their decision to convert the property's old barn into an Airbnb unwittingly disturbs the creature that lives there - and hell hath no fury like an angry barn elf.

Gremlins meets National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation in this seasonal shocker that is spiced up by some clever culture-clash comedy and little-known Nordic mythology. Bill (Martin Starr) inherits a remote house in Norway and decides to relocate his stuck-in-a-rut family to the land of the Midnight Sun. Also on the property is an old barn that they intend to convert into an Airbnb. But when they throw a renovation party on the premises, they enrage the live-in barn elf and discover that, like the gremlins, there are rules to be followed... Film-maker Magnus Martens has form in both comedy and horror, having directed 2011's Jackpot and episodes of TV's Fear the Walking Dead. Here, he struggles to strike quite the right balance between the two genres, but the film's conclusion is full-bore gore, and there's a certain amount of fun to be had as the festive frights turn a dark shade of claret.
