Review

As England continue their battle with South Africa in the latest Test series, Amazon Prime’s new documentary Ben Stokes: Phoenix from The Ashes could not be better timed. Of course there’s renewed interest in Stokes, since becoming Test cricket captain, he has helped reshape England as a cavalier attacking side who are willing to chase victory from the most unlikely positions.

The film, however, skips back to why Stokes time off last year to preserve his own mental health, and the key incidents in a brilliant but turbulent career. In conversation with cricket fanatic Sam Mendes, Stokes talks with searing honesty about how his will to win has sometimes stood in contrast to his anxieties about failure. As colleagues such as Joe Root testify to Stokes’s incredible talent and resilience, an epic sporting story plays out.
