Drama starring Yu Hong and Liu Xiaodong. Dong and Chun are both artists, teaching at the Beijing Art School. Dong hopes to sell his paintings to a Hong Kong dealer. Chun has hopes of emigrating to the United States. As the balance of success tips from one to the other, their emotional relationship also changes.
Wang Xiaoshuai's subtle drama looks at a couple of Beijing art tutors whose common bonds can't save their ailing relationship, especially when professional success passes from one to the other. Dipping into images of modern China for added emphasis, The Days elegantly employs style, music and an unfussy narrative to comment on the duo, the choice of black and white over colour simply reinforcing the lyrical beauty. The writer/director found it impossible to secure state approval and distribution and was blacklisted as a result; his film has yet to be seen in China.
