This slasher movie, about a group of hikers from the city sharing the Oregon wilderness with machete-wielding mountain men, is very similar to Don't Go in the Woods, made the same year. But this is the better film, both derivative of The Hills Have Eyes and almost certainly an inspiration for The Blair Witch Project. Director Jeff Lieberman engineers a relentless build-up of suspense, culminating in an outrageous twist near the film's end. Actor Jack Lemmon's son, Chris, stars as one of the teenagers who ignore the warnings of forest ranger George Kennedy not to venture further. Haven't any of these people seen Deliverance?
