Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Professor James Stewart tries to tell his conservative dad, the wonderfully irascible Charles Coburn, that he has married showgirl Ginger Rogers in this sparkling screwball comedy, directed by the great George Stevens. It's a funny idea, and you don't really notice that it's a one-joke movie. Super character actors in support include Beulah Bondi, playing slightly against type as Stewart's mum, Franklin Pangborn and Grady Sutton, and, very early in their careers, lively Jack Carson and lovable Hattie McDaniel. It's not great, but it's very likeable and fast-paced.
