Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

If you are going to rework the I Spit on Your Grave rape/revenge template, this is exactly the way to do it. French writer/director Coralie Fargeat's distinctly feminist slant produces a keen psychological examination of the central motives, not shying away from the delirious - and, be warned, excessive - grindhouse splatter or witty gender-neutral nudity, and layering the tautly controlled cat-and-mouse tension in sizzling, acid-dipped photography. Left fatally injured in the desert by her two-faced, married boyfriend after one of his friends rapes her and she threatens to tell his wife, Jennifer (a fierce Matilda Lutz) almost supernaturally drags herself back from the brink of death to exact the most gruesome damage on her sexist aggressors. By turn a subversion of the survivor-payback subgenre and a sly rummage through its most effective clichés, Fargeat never once forgets her prime targets are to shock, outrage and keep audiences squirming.
