Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

In this imaginative low-budget film noir, the great Erich von Stroheim (then past his peak) teamed up with talented young director, Anthony Mann, who went on to direct a series of classic 1950s westerns such as Winchester 73 and The Man from Laramie. Von Stroheim has the title role of the vaudeville sharpshooter who, despite an unhappy history with women, makes the mistake of falling for his alluring young assistant, played by Mary Beth Hughes. Of course this is very bad news for Hughes's husband, played by Dan Duryea. The film was made on such a shoestring that a park scene had to be faked on a soundstage with just a bench, a lamp and thick fog.
