Vengeance

A bizarre mix of courtroom drama and revenge thriller, this isn't quite held together by Nicolas Cage's distinct OTT acting style. Anna Hutchison plays the gang-raped woman whose ordeal is only exacerbated when she is shamed at the subsequent trial. The sight of insult being added to injury pushes Cage's deeply troubled cop off the deep end and onto the vigilante trail. Hutchinson makes a sympathetic victim, Don Johnson is gloriously oily as the rapists' crooked lawyer, and there's even a small role for former Dallas star Charlene Tilton, who's in Jacki Weaver mode as the spitfire momma defending her mouth-breathing sons. Director and seasoned stuntman Johnny Martin delivers visceral action, and Cage's performance is reliably unhinged, but there's the distinct impression that both have been spliced into a pre-existing afternoon TV movie.
