Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Just as Vincente Minnelli's Meet Me in St Louis broke the mould of the Hollywood musical, so this previously overlooked Guru Dutt offering tinkers with the conventions of the Bollywood masala. The songs (many of which have since become standards) are woven more naturally into the fabric of the storyline, peripheral characters participate in the dance routines alongside the principals, and the camera roves more freely around the evocative backdrops. Dutt also headlines as the taxi driver who falls in love with the boss's daughter, played by Shyama. Abounding in roguish humour and larcenous subplots involving kidnappers and safecrackers, this is well worth its overdue recognition.
