Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Cameraman-turned-director Jack Cardiff was still finding his feet with this, his second film. It's a rather turgid adaptation of AJ Cronin's tale, about a grown-up wartime evacuee who returns to England to clear his dad of a murder rap. Anglophile Van Johnson is not an ideal lead, though he furrows his brow nicely, but there's a fine British supporting cast. The budget limitations are obvious, despite the presence of US import Vera Miles (previously teamed with Johnson in the superior 23 Paces to Baker Street) and a brief location shoot in Liverpool. Movie buffs should look out for production manager Vincent Winter, here playing the Van Johnson character as a boy.
