Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Dealing with the inevitable fact of ageing is one of the greatest challenges for a movie star, and occasionally produces some of their best work (look at Clint Eastwood in his elegiac masterpiece, Unforgiven). Now it's John Travolta's turn in this tale of a young woman (Scarlett Johansson) who returns to her home after her mother's death only to find it occupied by a group of alcoholic literary types who have every intention of staying put. Despite Travolta's best efforts (and impressively silvered hair), he never quite convinces as an ageing, drunk writer; perhaps because in the end he's just too naturally dynamic for that kind of role. But what director Shainee Gabel's debut movie lacks slightly in dramatic credibility it more than makes up for in booze-sodden, lazy New Orleans atmosphere.
