Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Given that Roberto Duran is widely regarded as one of the greatest boxers of all time, it's surprising that it's taken this long to bring his story to the screen. But while there is much to like about the Hollywood debut of Venezuelan director Jonathan Jakubowicz, in a points decision, this would still go down as a draw. The main problem is that rather than concentrating on Duran's colourful life and career - he went from the slums of Panama to becoming a world champion in four different weight classes - almost as much screen time is given to his trainer Ray Arcel (Robert De Niro). Although the latter is a boxing legend in his own right, he does distract from the main event. On the plus side, Edgar Ramirez delivers a magnetic turn as the charismatic yet brutish fighter, while his two epic bouts with Sugar Ray Leonard (Usher) are memorably recreated. It's not quite a missed opportunity overall, but Hands of Stone does fail to deliver a knockout punch.
