The second film in Krzysztof Kieslowski's trilogy inspired by the ideals of the French Revolution is the slightest of the series, yet there is still much to admire in a movie intended as a tribute to Charlie Chaplin. Although a comedy, White is an examination of the aftermath of the Communist regime in Poland under which everyone was supposed to be equal. The picture painted of democratic Warsaw, with its shady deals and run-down streets, is both unflattering and affectionate, providing an animated backdrop to this droll story of love on the rocks. Zbigniew Zamachowski excels as the jilted hairdresser determined never to feel inferior again.
