Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

The mature pairing of Richard Gere and Diane Lane lends credence to this otherwise gooey portrait of midlife romance. Lane plays a woman who is estranged from her husband after an infidelity, but is under pressure to take him back. When the opportunity arises, she agrees to look after a friend's North Carolina beachfront inn, the sole guest of which is a dedicated doctor (Gere) with personal and professional problems of his own. The predictable ensues, with the two strangers opening up to one another and life-changing decisions being made. Based on the popular book by Nicholas Sparks (The Notebook), the weak script is rife with corny, clanging dialogue, and although Scott Glenn makes an impression as a grieving widow, the main characters are almost ciphers. The movie should still satisfy die-hard romantics, equipped as it is with a full set of love clichés, but hankies are strictly optional.
