Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Few horror movies rock the genre in such a contentiously divisive way as this disturbingly violent film from French writer/director Pascal Laugier. It tells of the twisted revenge taken by psychologically devastated Lucie (Mylène Jampanoï) on a family she's convinced constantly abused her and kept her captive in her youth. But as her best friend Anna (Morjana Alaoui) finds out, the truth is a far more complex proposition. Veering through Switchblade Romance and Hellraiser territory for a harshly surreal and often repulsive experience, Laugier's visceral audacity will for many be overpoweringly shocking. Yet as unpredictably nasty as it gets, there is a stark controversial point to the strangely beautiful excess as well as an astonishingly profound conclusion.
