Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Few debut directors arrive with baggage quite as heavy as Jordan Scott's. With Ridley Scott as a father and Tony Scott as an uncle (both serve as executive producers here) expectations are perhaps unfairly high. But she shows a sure touch in this, her debut feature. It's a sensual, erotically charged 1930s-set melodrama that has a passing similarity in theme to The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. Eva Green is compelling as Miss G, an inspirational and unorthodox teacher at a girls' boarding school. She dazzles her favoured charges, led by Juno Temple, with tales of foreign travel and adventure, and encourages them to realise their potential. But trouble arrives with the appearance of a mysterious Spanish pupil (Maria Valverde), and the scene is set for a mesmerising tale of infatuation, jealousy and betrayal. If Scott isn't quite showing the eye of her dad, or (perhaps thankfully) her uncle's tendency to blow things up, this is certainly an impressive start.
