A star rating of 2 out of 5.

David Parkinson

Ever since the star-filled splendour of 1932's Grand Hotel, the multi-story movie has enjoyed regular resurgences. This train-bound melodrama provides berths for such accomplished character actors as Victor Jory and Sidney Blackmer, but it's let down by the simplicity of its plotlines and the mediocrity of its stars. Evelyn Venable (who later modelled for the Columbia Pictures logo) lacks spark as the flaky actress who absconds before the opening of her new play and Ralph Forbes has a damp dishcloth quality as her devoted fiancé. Consequently, you wind up relying on subplots involving blackmail, twins and a ménâge à trois for amusement.
