Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Believe it or not, this quirky fantasy was cult director Alan Rudolph's conscious bid for a box-office hit. Had it been made in the Golden Age of Hollywood, it would probably have been a frothy delight, but Rudolph too often strains for effect. Timothy Hutton, always up for something a trifle outré, stars as a dead man who meets his future love (Kelly McGillis) in heaven when she's not yet been born on Earth. It looks good, like most Rudolph movies (Choose Me, Trouble in Mind), and Hutton handles the comedy with surprising aplomb. But perhaps more surprising is the uncredited appearance of Hutton's then wife Debra Winger, who gives a career-low performance as the male administrative head of heaven. Look out for other cameos from Neil Young, Tom Petty and Ellen Barkin.
