This British melodrama would be dismissed as sentimental tosh if it wasn't based on a true story that hit the headlines in the mid-1940s. Drawing on the actual records of the case, director Charles Crichton uses a series of artful flashbacks to pad out the courtroom battle at the centre of the action, as biological mother Yvonne Mitchell fights Cornell Borchers for custody of the child Borchers adopted as a war orphan. Crichton lays on the pathos so thickly that the emotional drama never really tugs at our heartstrings.
