Review

For a pirate radio station whose airwaves are so puny they can barely be received in the adjacent room, Kurupt FM’s success has extended far beyond the walls of its Brentford flat. Since mockumentary People Just Do Nothing made its BBC debut in 2012, it has won a Bafta, become a sensation at music festivals and will soon have a big-screen outing in People Just Do Nothing: Big in Japan.

Not bad for what began as a series of self-shot and self-edited YouTube webisodes. One driver of the comedy’s popularity is its authentic depiction of pirate radio culture, with cast member Asim Chaudhry (Chabuddy G) recollecting furious online comments from viewers who thought it was real. What’s certainly real in this film is the bond between the cast, a group of savvy and talented outsiders who forged new mainstream comic territory
