Tony Sloman

Long-delayed and barely released, this murky thriller reunites Debra Winger with her Urban Cowboy director, James Bridges. Nothing Winger does or says (isn't that the throatiest voice this side of June Allyson?) is without interest, but sometimes her choice of material leaves a lot to be desired. Here she does a little sleuthing following a drug deal that went wrong, though not half as wrong as the movie itself, which spent a couple of years being edited, restructured, cut again and then finally dubbed in England. Legend has it Bridges asked for some odd sound effects: listen hard to those car doors closing and you'll hear gunshots. Still, there's a clever cameo from Paul Winfield as a blasé record producer, while Joe Jackson provides sterling support on the soundtrack.
