Summary

It is a satire about life in Cuba. The members of a funeral procession and some truck drivers who need to take the same route begin to talk about God and the world and they end up discovering that life for both groups has many similarities and many differences, depending on the point of view.

Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

This road movie - the last project completed by Tomás Gutiérrez Alea, Cuba's best-known director - has too many echoes of Alea's own Death of a Bureaucrat for comfort. The passing of a famous singer's funeral cortege across the island should have inspired some seething satire, but the swipes at petty officialdom, government propaganda and macho misanthropy are merely passing blows at easy targets. There's simply not enough tension in the developing romance between onetime lecturer Mirtha Ibarra and her gone-to-bad student Jorge Perugorria to hold our attention. Carlos Cruz is hissably callous as Ibarra's soulless husband, but this is a disappointing swansong.
