It was remade in 2002 under its original book title as Red Dragon with Anthony Hopkins taking top billing, but this first screen adaptation of Thomas Harris's novel is far more gripping. William Petersen stars as the former FBI whizz brought in to help hunt down a sophisticated serial murderer, with Brian Cox offering memorable support in the role of Hannibal Lecktor. Michael Mann's top-notch direction and a clever plot combine to make this atmospheric and arresting viewing.
