Summary

Satirical thriller starring Robert De Niro, Edward Burns and Kelsey Grammer. New York detective Eddie Flemming's pursuit of two eastern European killers is hampered by the pair's manipulation of the media and voracious journalists who will sink to any depths for a story.

Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

It must have seemed like a great idea on the phone: New York cop thriller with a social conscience teams old dog Robert De Niro with hip young gunslinger Edward Burns, throwing in Frasier star Kelsey Grammer for light relief. But while Two Days in the Valley writer/director John Herzfeld's thriller purports to be a savage indictment of tabloid TV - De Niro's media-friendly cop feeds crime exclusives to Grammer's news hack in return for exposure - it's merely a glossy sham. The film indulges in the same brutal violence that it accuses the small screen of glorifying, as our disparate heroes pursue two implausible eastern Europeans, apparently raised on US TV, who are recording their murderous crime spree on videotape. Any subtlety of message is swamped by the welter of join-the-dots action.
