Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Recalling both Les Diaboliques and Taste of Fear (a 1961 Hammer horror, which was penned by this film's director Jimmy Sangster), this school chiller gets off to a cracking start with an eerie title sequence that concludes with a genuine shock. Peter Cushing, complete with an artificial arm and a genius for appearing when least expected, is on creepy form as a demented headmaster who plays sound effects records to re-create the atmosphere of his fire-damaged school. Judy Geeson is admirably ill at ease, while Ralph Bates and Joan Collins whip up some truly malevolent passion. More fun than frightening.
