Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Hugh Jackman stars as real-life politician Gary Hart, the favourite in the 1988 presidential race, who enters into a bitter war with the media once rumours surface of an affair. Chairing a fascinating discussion surrounding the roots of modern "personality politics", director Jason Reitman (Juno, Tully) uses The Front Runner to transport us back to a time when a public figure's private life was deemed just that. Ethics versus the public interest are debated in news rooms and campaign offices, bringing out some terrific performances from the likes of Mamoudou Athie as an idealistic young reporter, and Vera Farmiga as Hart's wife. Somewhat disappointingly, Jackman himself is more of a figurehead, looking every bit the statesman but prevented from exploring much beyond the man's professional surface. So while The Front Runner fails to offer a clear conclusion either way, showing the roots of today's divisive political climate rather than providing any lessons, it remains a well-acted illustration of the campaign trail's fevered machinations.
