Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Dorothy Whipple's novel is the source for this downbeat melodrama set in the Midlands suburbs. Insurance clerk Mervyn Johns is content to struggle along until he's persuaded to invest in a sure-fire speculation by financier Alfred Drayton. His unexpected wealth goes to the family's head and, when the deal proves to have been a swindle, Drayton kills himself and Johns is jailed for deception. Director Norman Walker rather wallows in this glum middle-class morality tale. But he prudently cashes in on Johns's fretful features and the solid support provided by Nora Swinburne and Joan Greenwood, as his wife and self-sacrificing daughter.
