David Niven won an Oscar as the retired "major" whose libido gets the better of him in this wonderfully - and perhaps surprisingly - cast version of Terence Rattigan's play. Wendy Hiller is the proprietor of a Bournemouth boarding house, presiding over a small group of paying guests whose neuroses start to unravel. Deborah Kerr's mother-dominated mousiness is too insistent, but Burt Lancaster's Hemingway-esque turn is great fun and Rita Hayworth, as his ex-wife, is marvellously convincing as a woman who knows that time and her beauty are running out. Minor flaws aside, director Delbert Mann's film is both moving and entertaining.
