Oscar Isaac does double duty as 14th-century Italian poet Dante Alighieri and acclaimed American writer/biographer Nick Tosches in this baffling misfire from artist-turned-director Julian Schnabel. Based on Tosches's 2002 novel, the story switches between Dante's struggles to complete epic poem The Divine Comedy and 2001 New York, as a fictionalised version of Tosches gets involved with mobsters (John Malkovich, Gerard Butler) in a violent and hare-brained scheme to steal Dante's original manuscript. With roles for Gal Gadot, Jason Momoa and Al Pacino, Schnabel's work is packed with talent, but aside from a live-wire Isaac, it's largely an ill-fitting cast in what too often feels like a bad episode of The Sopranos. Only director Martin Scorsese brings any real sincerity to his part as Dante's mentor, Isaiah, in an otherwise laughable meditation on creativity. Although consistent with Schnabel's earlier subjects - painters (Basquiat and At Eternity's Gate), poets (Before Night Falls), writers (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly) - this two-and-a-half-hour ramble is a bewildering mess.
