Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Peter O'Toole's deliciously unbalanced portrayal of a legendary Hollywood star falling off the wagon is one of the joys of this farcical excursion to the relatively early days (1954) of American TV. There are lots of echoes here, as naive writer Mark Linn-Baker tries to keep the Errol Flynn-like hero sober for a television interview in the way that Budd Schulberg was minder for F Scott Fitzgerald. And as the show's despotic boss, Joseph Bologna has more than a touch or two of comedian Sid Caesar about him. Director Richard Benjamin, formerly an actor, will be hard pushed to make anything better or more enjoyably reprehensible.
