Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Winner of the Golden Bear for best movie at the Berlin film festival, this harrowing drama, set during the famine that ravaged Bengal in the early 1940s, is one of Satyajit Ray's most politically committed films. Yet it retains the humanism and concern for character that makes his work so compelling and rewarding. While the railings at the caste system and government corruption and incompetence make for powerful viewing, it's the slow realisation of a Brahmin and his wife that people matter more than rigid rules that makes this an unmissable experience. Soumitra Chatterjee and Babita are superb in the leads, bringing intimacy and humanity to a monumental and tragic tale.
