Period war drama starring Mel Gibson as a widower and committed pacifist, who is reluctantly dragged into the American War of Independence after one of his sons falls victim to a sadistic British colonel.
What has Mel Gibson got against the English? Five years after his Scottish epic Braveheart, he repeated his anti-English stance in this film, set during the American War of Independence. Gibson plays Benjamin Martin, a farmer living peacefully in South Carolina who comes out fighting against the British army alongside his gung-ho son Gabriel (Heath Ledger). The battle scenes are ferociously well staged, but some may baulk at the pantomimic villainy of Jason Isaacs's cruel colonel, as well as the historically inaccurate atrocities that he is seen to commit.
