Summary

Drama starring Glenda Jackson, Alan Bates and Oliver Reed in Ken Russell's adaptation of DH Lawrence's classic novel of sexual passions. England in the 1920s: the Brangwen sisters, Gudrun and Ursula, find suitors in wealthy industrialist Gerald Crich and his schoolteacher friend Rupert Birkin. For one couple it will mean love and marriage, for the other ultimate tragedy, but for both an initiation into the mystery of sexual and emotional relations.

Review

A star rating of 5 out of 5.

This adaptation of the DH Lawrence novel marked one of Ken Russell's more successful forays into literature, with the director resisting the excesses that would come to mar some of his later films. Set in the mining community of Nottinghamshire in the 1920s, it stars Oliver Reed and Alan Bates as friends who woo sisters Jennie Linden and Glenda Jackson (who won an Oscar for her performance), in the process bringing love and tragedy upon them all. The nude male wrestling scene makes unnecessary macho points that didn't need emphasis, but it gave the film its notoriety. And where would Russell have been without notoriety?
