Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Picking up where 2016's documentary Supersonic ended, Jake Scott's concert film mounts a sometimes stirring, sometimes frustrating celebration of Oasis's two huge gigs at Knebworth in 1996. Aiming to convey how the occasion crystallised an era at its zenith, Scott corrals fond recollections from fans and band members alike. The approach works for the prologue, which revisits the pre-internet sensation of telephoning or queuing for tickets - or taping the radio broadcast if you lost out. Electric footage of support act the Prodigy raises goosebumps, too, only for the buzz to diminish as the main act is drowned out by increasingly banal voiceovers. While the spectacle of 125,000 smartphone-free fans pogoing to Acquiesce thrills, Noel Gallagher's voluble comments land with all the appeal of audience members talking loudly at gigs. If Oasis were indeed "at the height of their powers", as is claimed, more show and less tell might have slammed the point home more emphatically.
