An overheated and rather silly melodrama set in Argentina in the days when Rudolph Valentino was "tango-ing" a swooning female audience. Mathilda May is the young wife en route to South America who takes on a new identity and ends up being fought over by gangster Esai Morales and "dirty dancer" Vincent D'Onofrio. It's beautifully designed, and the much put-upon May delivers a sensual performance. Unfortunately, there are Come Dancing contestants with more charisma than D'Onofrio (so good as Bobby Goren in TV's Law & Order: Criminal Intent) and writer/director Leonard Schrader's script is dripping with pretension. The distinguished Fernando Rey is wasted in a supporting role.
