A Warner Bros version of Graham Greene's novel about the Spanish musician who gave up his career to fight the Fascists, travelling to Britain to stop the English selling coal to Franco's troops. Charles Boyer - French, but no matter - makes an engaging hero, but the Hollywoodised England takes some swallowing. Villains Peter Lorre and Katina Paxinou do their best to stop Boyer, but Lauren Bacall totally fails to convince as a British coal baron's daughter. Direction was unwisely entrusted to Herman Shumlin, whose previous experience lay mainly in the New York theatre. He was dispatched back east after this venture, leaving Warners' postwar spy films in more reliable hands. The movie isn't uneventful, though, just uninvolving.
