Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Based on the children's character created by Ethel Pedley, this is the first of Yoram Gross's series of live-action/animation films about the little red-headed girl who can talk to animals. There isn't much to get excited about in the story, in which Dot gets lost in the Australian bush and is helped out by a kindly kangaroo, and the songs will hardly set toes a-tapping, but the blend of cartoon characters and real wildlife footage is quite neatly done. Disney would undoubtedly have produced a more polished job, but it's honest, entertaining and educational.
